In 1995 the designer Gerald Wurz designed the first manually operated prototyp of a Sunsquare sun awning-sail on a roof terrace in Vienna. In 1996 the motor-driven version was designed in collaboration with Norbert Kautzky. There are now over a thousand such installations throughout Europe.

For the designer and manufacturer, "Architecture for shade" forms the dominant theme for ongoing further development of the sun protection issue.
