SunSquare Shading Solutions GmbH
The roots of SunSquare go back to 1973. Originally founded in Vienna, the company relocated to Tulln in 2003, where today it operates on a 4,500 m² site dedicated to production and development. This expansion enabled SunSquare to meet growing demand and outsource parts of its manufacturing within Austria and the EU.
Norbert Kautzky established the concept of the “open workshop” – a space for research, development, and prototype construction for renowned clients such as the Vienna Philharmonic, Alcatel, Grundig, Philips, and Siemens. From the collaboration with Mag. Gerald Wurz emerged the vision of a motorized sun sail with architectural sophistication. The idea was refined into a serial product and patented worldwide: SunSquare was born.
Since 1993, SunSquare has been setting new standards in sun sail construction. Each system is a custom-made, unique piece that integrates harmoniously into architecture and impresses with technical precision. Shade is not only considered functionally, but also as a design element – part of the architectural whole.
SunSquare sun sails are wind-monitored and fully automatic. As the only sun sail developed by a designer, SunSquare stands for freedom of form and aesthetic integration.
With over 15,000 completed projects worldwide, an export share of over 80%, and a strong partner network in Europe, Switzerland, the USA, and Thailand, SunSquare is internationally established. All partners undergo intensive training and guarantee the highest quality in planning and installation.
SunSquare employs over 27 people and is a sought-after employer in the region. Sales in Austria are handled both directly and through regional partners – ensuring close proximity to the market and to client needs.
In 2025, SunSquare Kautzky GmbH and Norbert Kautzky Mechanik GmbH were merged into SunSquare Shading Solutions GmbH.

From 1993 onward, he played a key role in the development of the SunSquare system together with Gerald Wurz. His focus was on technical advancement and external R&D collaborations.

All SunSquare systems are planned, tested, and produced in Austria – using materials from the EU and in collaboration with partner companies in the region. Our headquarters in Tulln is a hub for ideas, manufacturing, and quality control.
