More Shade, More Enjoyment: Extension at the Palmenhaus Vienna
Since 1999, four SunSquare shade sails have provided reliable shade, and now the iconic system has been expanded.

The Palmenhaus Vienna is one of the city center’s most renowned gastronomic destinations – and since 1999, it has also been one of the first establishments to implement large‑scale textile shading solutions by SunSquare. For nearly three decades, the shade sails have demonstrated day after day how reliable and durable high‑quality sun protection can be.
The system has now been expanded with additional sails to make the outdoor area even more usable and to meet growing expectations for comfort and climate resilience.
More shade, more comfort, more usable outdoor space
With the newly added shading area, a significantly larger and more comfortable outdoor space is created – even on hot days when the microclimate in the densely built city center tends to heat up. The SunSquare sails reduce direct sunlight, create a cooler and pleasantly tempered atmosphere, and extend the amount of time guests can enjoy the space without the need for technical cooling.
Benefits for staff – less effort, more efficiency
The expansion offers clear advantages for the service team:
- No daily setup and takedown as required with umbrellas
- No alignment work during service
- Stable, reliable shade zones even in windy conditions
- Unobstructed paths and clean lines without umbrella stands or individual shading units
Especially in a high‑frequency environment with tight service workflows, a fixed installation provides enormous relief in day‑to‑day operations.
Sustainable enhancement – expanded shading for a long‑standing project
The extension after 27 years reflects trust, long‑term functionality, and a responsible approach to resources: the original structure was preserved, supplemented with additional sails, and now offers an outdoor area that blends seamlessly into the Palmenhaus’s unique atmosphere, both visually and functionally.
More shade, more well‑being, more urban comfort – and a gastronomic space that remains reliably usable outdoors, even on the hottest summer days.
