Palmenhaus Vienna
Over 220 m² of sail shading at Palmenhaus Vienna: reliable shade since 1999, satisfied guests and efficient operations in the heart of the city.
Sun protection for one of the most iconic gastronomy venues in the city centre
Located in the heart of Vienna’s Burggarten, at one of the city’s most prominent inner‑city sites, Palmenhaus Vienna has stood for decades as a place of urban enjoyment in an exceptional setting. As early as 1999, Palmenhaus became one of the first gastronomy venues of this scale to opt for a textile shading solution by SunSquare.
A pioneering project with foresight
Five sail shading systems were installed, each providing 42 to 47 m² of shaded area. At the time, the systems were executed as spring‑loaded installations, long before today’s compensator systems were available. Over the years, the sails have been replaced twice, while the core structure of the systems has remained unchanged—an impressive testament to the durability and long‑term value of SunSquare systems in continuous gastronomic use.
Technical evolution with lasting impact
In the early years, the sails were manufactured using the then‑common battened cut. Today, modern radial‑cut sails are also in use at Palmenhaus—made from Sattler 321 acrylic fabric in beige.
The material blends discreetly into the historic and garden setting while providing reliable sun protection during hot summer days. With a total sail area exceeding 220 m², the installation creates a generously shaded outdoor space that remains comfortable to use even during periods of intense heat.
Tangible benefits for gastronomy operations
The use of SunSquare sail shades offers Palmenhaus Vienna a range of decisive advantages:
- Reliable shade in a highly frequented inner‑city location
- Significantly improved comfort for guests, even at midday
- Returning guests who consciously choose shaded seating areas
- Reduced workload for service staff, as there is no need to handle, adjust or secure parasols
- Clear, uncluttered spaces without visual disturbance from individual shade elements
- More efficient workflows in daily restaurant operations
Particularly in the demanding rhythm of everyday service, the added value of permanently installed, large‑scale sail shading becomes evident—functionally, economically and aesthetically.
