Heritage-compliant shading for an inner courtyard with a SunSquare sail.

Historic courtyard with heritage-compliant shading

The heritage-compliant mounting respects the historic building fabric and creates additional comfort in the protected outdoor area.

Modern shading for a historic courtyard in Antwerp

Historic buildings present unique challenges when planning shading solutions. Architecture, heritage conservation, and modern usage requirements must be balanced without compromising the valuable building fabric. This exact challenge was successfully met in 2021 during a project in the courtyard of the Antwerp Chamber of Commerce .

For the heritage-protected courtyard of a building complex with origins dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries, a SunSquare sail without any support posts was installed. With a sail area of approximately 38 m², the canopy spans the entire courtyard, creating a pleasant seating area in the heart of the historic ensemble.

The sail was crafted from high-quality Sattler 320 fabric in color 923 Sand-Beige . The understated color scheme harmonizes with the historic facades and highlights the building's architectural character.

Heritage conservation and functionality in harmony

Special attention was paid to the mounting of the sail. With historic structures, interventions in the building fabric must be kept to a minimum. Therefore, the installation was carried out using four wall mounts, which were sensitively anchored into the joints of the existing masonry.

A key advantage of SunSquare technology lies in the discreet wall rings to which the sail endpoints can be attached. This subtle solution allows for a technically secure anchorage without visually dominating the historic architecture. As a result, the shading system remains respectful of the heritage-protected site and blends harmoniously into the overall aesthetic.

Elegant solution for sophisticated architecture

High-quality shading systems and heritage-protected architecture do not have to be a contradiction. Through careful planning and the ability to mount sails with minimal and visually discreet attachment points, even demanding historic buildings can benefit from modern sun and weather protection.

The sail creates additional comfort while simultaneously preserving the character and appeal of an extraordinary historic structure.
