Sun protection for JKU Linz
Three SunSquare AX-I sails covering 115 m² provide stylish sun and heat protection on the Somnium platform at JKU Linz.
Design Meets Education – SunSquare Sails for the Campus
High above the rooftops of the Johannes Kepler University Linz, the spectacular panoramic platform “Somnium” now offers not only breathtaking views but also effective sun protection.
Three custom SunSquare AX-I systems were installed to create a comfortable outdoor environment for students, faculty, and visitors.
The one-sided retractable rectangular sails, made from high-quality Soltis 86 fabric in white, span a total area of approximately 115 m².
Thanks to the existing steel structure, the sails could be elegantly suspended, appearing to float above the platform. Their clean lines and subtle design integrate seamlessly into the modern architecture, reinforcing the university’s open and forward-thinking character.
Beyond UV and heat protection, the SunSquare systems significantly enhance the usability and comfort of the platform — an outstanding example of how design, functionality, and educational culture can come together in public space planning.
