SunSquare rain sails at Kallmünz Castle — three rectangular sails over a historic roof with support arms and viewing gaps.

Kallmünz Castle

At Kallmünz Castle, 100 m² of SunSquare sails provide elegant rain protection — historic integration, premium materials, and smart drainage for the restaurant.

Protection with a View – SunSquare Rain Sails for Kallmünz Castle

Since 1993, SunSquare has been developing textile, retractable solutions for sun and rain protection. The project at Kallmünz Castle posed a unique challenge: the conically shaped restaurant garden needed a high-quality rain protection system — all while respecting the requirements of historic preservation and architectural integrity.

A total of 100 m² was covered using three rectangular sails, each measuring 35 m². The sails were designed to drain centrally along the fabric roll, using Soltis W96, a waterproof material that prevents edge runoff due to its curved shape. Water is directed specifically to the pent roof of the newly renovated wing.

The three sail rolls appear to “float” above the historic monk nun roof tiles, supported from behind by retaining arms. The design follows the principle of perusal: 40 cm view gaps between the sails create a layered visual effect, adding depth and making the space appear larger — especially toward the east-facing overlap.

Special attention was given to heritage integration: the freestanding elements blend harmoniously into the castle’s overall appearance, thanks to high-quality detailing and sensitive planning.

The result: a technically refined, architecturally respectful rain protection system that enhances both the functionality and atmosphere of this historic site.
