Requirement:
Creation of a weatherproof village square
The project centred on the creation of an outdoor area that is protected from the weather, yet open and flexible to use - designed for events, markets, concerts and everyday village life. With a sail area of around 190 m², three high-quality SunSquare systems were realised, consisting of two SQK-II systems and an AX-I construction with two expansion joints.
The aim:
A seasonal sun and rain protection for up to 150 people, which can be extended and retracted at the touch of a button as required - without restricting the open atmosphere and usability of the space.
Technical requirements & special challenges:
- Efficient drainage due to inclination in all directions - no water accumulation despite flat roofing.
- Construction with supports up to 4.5 m high to allow the full passage height and optimum angle of inclination.
- Triangular sail manufactured in an aesthetic beam cut, while the rectangular sail provides visual excitement as a dynamic zigzag sail
- Sail material: DICKSON Orchestra in the colour Gris
- The space remains open for food trucks, stage constructions and market stalls.
- Public use & events require a robust design - reinforced supports and materials were used specifically.
- The sails are illuminated from below and create an inviting, warm lighting atmosphere in the evening hours.
- The fully automatic systems can be conveniently controlled as required.
Progress & realisation
The initiative to redesign the village square came directly from the municipality. After a positive vote by the population, the project was planned in detail together with the building authorities, approved under building law and realised on time.
The result:
Today, the village square is a versatile, seasonally usable meeting place - protected from the weather, atmospheric and technically state-of-the-art. From spring to autumn, it serves as an event venue, marketplace and meeting place - modularly designed and open to the most diverse requirements of the community.
The flexible textile architecture of SunSquare enables multifunctional use.
