Textile Architecture for Public Comfort in Buochs
SunSquare project in Buochs: sail structures on the village square provide stylish sun & rain protection – perfect for outdoor events regardless of the weather.
Weatherproof Village Square – SunSquare Project in Buochs, Switzerland
The central goal of this project was to create a weather-protected yet open and flexible outdoor space—designed for events, markets, concerts, and everyday village life. Covering approximately 190 m², three high-quality SunSquare systems were installed: two SQK-II units and one single-sided rectangular sail with two compensators.
The aim: seasonal sun and rain protection for up to 150 people, fully retractable at the push of a button—without compromising the open atmosphere or usability of the square.
Technical Requirements & Special Challenges
- Efficient drainage through multi-directional slope—no water accumulation despite large sail coverage
- Support structures up to 4.5 m high to ensure full clearance and optimal angles
- Triangular sails in elegant radial cut; rectangular sail designed as a dynamic zigzag sail for visual impact
- Sail material: DICKSON Orchestra, color Gris
- The square remains accessible for food trucks, stage setups, and market stalls
- Public use demands robust construction—reinforced supports and materials were specifically chosen
- Integrated lighting beneath the sails creates a warm, inviting atmosphere in the evening
- Fully automated systems allow easy, demand-based control
Project Development & Implementation
Initiated directly by the municipality, the redesign of the village square was positively approved by the local community. The project was planned in detail with the building authority, legally approved, and completed on schedule.
Result
Today, the village square is a versatile, seasonally usable meeting space—weatherproof, atmospheric, and technically state-of-the-art. From spring to autumn, it serves as a venue, marketplace, and social hub—modular in design and open to the diverse needs of the community.
SunSquare’s flexible textile architecture enables multifunctional use at the highest level.
