City meets shadow — Rhein-Sieg Forum
A SunSquare system with 220 m² of sail area was installed in the public space of the Rhein-Sieg-Forum.
Shade for all – functional architecture with a mediterranean flair
An exceptional project realised by Volker Weiss Outdoor provides shade for the circular stepped area of the Rhein-Sieg-Forum in Germany. This public event space is freely accessible and used both for organised events and as a daily recreational area.
The challenge: The installation had to be vandalism-proof, accident-preventive, and compliant with fire safety regulations – while also making a strong architectural statement.
With just eight support posts, some shared by multiple sails, an elegant solution was created that shades 220 m² of space. The sails are made of Soltis 86, a transparent fabric that allows exciting views of the city hall façade and preserves the visual impact of the striking vinegar trees – bringing a Mediterranean atmosphere to the heart of the city.
The City of Siegburg is highly satisfied with the implementation and praises the added value for its citizens. The project contributes to climate-resilient urban design and enhances the quality of public spaces.
